While little jewelry pieces are the most popular gift, I'd ask you not to limit yourself. The concept of a gift is abstract. You being present is the greatest gift on the playa. Bring along something fun and physical, but know that giving isn't about the material object itself.
Anyway, sometimes it’s decently prepared burners who need a light. That Leonardo’s box idea is clever. Last year loaned out our generator to our neighbor, a tarp to another neighbor that were virgins and didn’t bring shade, always loan out tools, but by far my favorite was tri tip we cooked on Friday. We gifted delicious cuts of tri tip to whomever was passing by and the thanks and reactions to burners who hadn’t had a bite of protein all week was so rewarding, we plan on doing it again. The best gift I ever gave was a cheap, flashing gummy ring I ground-scored somewhere in the dust of deep playa.

The Black Rock Desert playa is vast, so everyone rides a bike at Burning Man. Baskets and tassels and bells are great gifts, and, because so much goes on at night at Burning Man, bike lights are as well. Fur is everywhere at Burning Man. They love giving hugs at Burning Man, and fur feels lovely to touch, but temperatures also drop at night and it can feel a tad nippy out in the middle of the desert. Do you know how all of the art is made out at Burning Man? Contributions from donors who love art or Burning Man or love the people who love art or Burning Man.
I’ve taken a bunch of strings of battery powered lights and handed them out to people riding without lights at night. I considered it a gift to them and to everyone else trying not to hit anyone on the playa. Sometimes we give gifts one-on-one, in a moment of human connection. We stop, we see each other, one gives a gift, and the other appreciates it. Other times, a gift is given to everyone — art for the masses, food fed to anyone walking by, stacks of stickers handed out by the fistful. Both approaches are wonderful and drive the community toward a future of plenty, but take the moment to appreciate the gift you’re giving for what it is.

I ordered a set of 10 nifty multi-tool cards that I know guys would love, but then I realized the theme for the year was metamorphosis.... And I had written a poem about a butterfly for a friend, which I could adapt and print out as a poem fridge magnet. I also wrote my own poem about burning man which was fun. Here are the two poems I gifted to people as my main gift. I printed probably 50, but I wish I'd printed 100. Last year I got super high and the batteries died in my headlamp and el wire on my backpack.

These were collected from the lost and found at my work. I sewd tule over them and trailing along behind. I’ve been a burner at heart all my life and didn’t know it. Some of the best gifts are super simple. Gifting is not about handing out tchotchkes, it’s about giving someone something they desire. Focus on that, rather than the physical object, and you’ll be a happy gifter.

I’m not really into the swag gifts often presented on the Playa. I get the intention, but after 6 years, have drawers full of stuff that just sits there. My first year I created a huge list of Jokes… some funny, some stupid, some raunchy, some cute. My gift was to tell some one a joke and make them smile! – This idea had unforeseen affects, I then handed the person the list of jokes and asked them to tell me one. The joy in their faces reading thru to find the “perfect” joke was a treasure.
Another option is just purchasing a Hydration Bladder, and you can put that into a backpack you already own! I did that for Midburn in Israel, and it actually worked out really well. One of the most useful and popular gifts I was given, and then re-gifted was a bic lighter taped to a rope like a necklace.
These gifts are given without discrimination, simply because the recipient exists. Get a hat that will protect your Burner's pretty little head from the sun, but will stay on the wind and fits their style. This is a ubiquitous garment at Burning Man. If you are getting one for your significant other, make sure that they love you and won’t kill you if you get the wrong size. All of their Burner friends will probably be annoyed with them (although, they'll probably secretly steal it and use it a few times too when no one is looking). This one is certainly not for everyone, but if you knew how much Burners talked dirty, you’d concur that this might be a good gift for certain kinky folks out there.

Having a few bandanas/ headscarves is essential to surviving on the playa. I always bring several different options with me to festivals and have purchased this pack of a dozen of assortment bandanas to give to people when need me. Hell, they make for a basic but great gift. I loved giving a few of these out to friends in my camp, and having extras when I needed them. Come the last day of my second burn, I was gifted me a beautiful fur coat because they said they were moving and trying to downsize.
I always meet great folks that way. For Burners who like to stay up at night, which is all of them, they need to wear lots of light-up accessories, from flashing fur coats to light-up hats and glasses and rings and necklaces. Look for electroluminescent wire, flashing blinky lights and such.
Every year we bring apples and plums picked from the family orchard. By day three you would think we were giving away gold nuggets. Burners have plenty of opportunities for alcoholic refreshment, but not so much for fresh fruit. We have a desiccant bag handy for the fruit cores If folks want to sit and chat while they munch. I don’t have this year’s gift sorted out yet, but I have to figure out something that won’t moop. Savor the private ones — this is a personal moment.
